On the 9th of July 2024, MyWorld Skills and Training delivered an engaging and free training course on Unity game development at the University of Bristol. This event was part of the EPSRC-funded Black Mentors initiative, aimed at inspiring and empowering young people from diverse backgrounds. The participants, students from Bristol Metropolitan Academy, had the unique opportunity to delve into the world of game design and development.

Selim Tudgey, a seasoned game developer and instructor, curated the training program. She crafted a hands-on activity that guided the students through the process of designing and creating a simple 3D game using Unity, a popular and powerful game development software. Tudgey’s expertise and passion for the subject shone through, captivating the students and fostering an environment of enthusiasm and creativity.

From the outset, the students displayed remarkable eagerness and engagement. They quickly grasped the basics of Unity, moving on to more complex tasks with enthusiasm. Tudgey’s interactive teaching style and the students’ keen interest resulted in a productive and dynamic learning atmosphere.

The highlight of the day was the students’ determination to continue working through their allocated break time, showcasing their dedication and excitement for game development. This enthusiasm not only highlighted the success of the course but also underscored the potential of these young individuals to pursue further education and careers in technology and game design.

Events like these are crucial in providing accessible and inspiring educational opportunities for young people, particularly those from underrepresented communities. The collaboration between MyWorld Skills and Training, the University of Bristol, and the EPSRC-funded Black Mentors program exemplifies the positive impact that targeted educational initiatives can have.

As the day concluded, it was evident that the students left with newfound skills, a deeper understanding of game development, and a heightened interest in pursuing further learning in this exciting field. The success of this training course bodes well for future initiatives aimed at nurturing young talent and diversifying the tech industry.
